One company’s commitment to treat vulnerable animals

Tell me a bit about Arbutus Medical

Arbutus Medical makes surgical tools to break down barriers to safe surgery and supports surgeons or GPs learning new surgical techniques. Using patented DrillCover technology, Arbutus Medical provides safe, reliable, high quality and affordable surgical tools. Our power tool systems have been used to treat over 36,000 human patients and 21,000 animal patients in 32 countries. The tools feature a reusable liquid and pathogen proof fabric cover that fully envelopes a robust, powerful and affordable hardware tool creating the perfect orthopaedic solution for the cost-conscious veterinarian. To date, Arbutus Medical has two orthopaedic drill and one oscillating saw products on the market.

How does this relate to veterinary medicine?

The DrillCover technology enables us to provide sterile and affordable orthopaedic power tools for veterinarians. The orthopaedic drills are used in fracture fixation and CCL repairs (such as lateral suture, TTA and TPLO procedures) and the oscillating saws in osteotomies, amputations and arthroplasties. This equipment not only allows for sterile surgeries, but enables shorter surgeries as well.

What is the Vets for Safe Surgery Campaign?

The Vets for Safe Surgery Campaign supports organizations treating vulnerable animals for trauma injury around the world by donating orthopaedic power tool kits.  Fresh off of supporting the Gorilla Doctors in 2018, Arbutus Medical has committed to supporting another 2 organizations in 2019, with the intention of expanding access to safe surgical care for all patients in need.

The Gorilla Doctors, treating mountain gorillas across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were the 2018 Vets for Safe Surgery Campaign donation recipients.

Who are the 2019 Vets for Safe Surgery Campaign donation recipients?

The 2019 campaign application closed on 30 June 2019, and the recipients were only recently announced. The first recipient is the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a pioneering conservation organization dedicated to the protection of wildlife and the preservation of habitats in East Africa; the second is the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the United States.
